I was the first president elected who had served in the US Navy. I served from 1941 to 1945 as a lieutenant. I was first rejected when I volunteered for the US Army in the spring of 1941 because of my troublesome back. Later that year, I was accepted by the Navy. I fought in World War II and the Solomon Islands campaign. During my service, I won the Navy and Marine Corp Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, and the American Defense Service Medal, along with a few others.
